in the news, and other things

FROM L.A. TIMES:

"Gov. Schwarzenegger proposes sales tax increase, deep cuts in services

In an effort to cut a projected $24-billion deficit by the middle of 2010, Schwarzenegger today [11/6/08] proposed:

-- a sales tax increase of 1 1/2 cents on the dollar, which could raise more than $10 billion. Sales tax in Los Angeles would shoot up to 10.25%.

-- extending the sales tax to appliance and furniture repair, vehicle repair, golf, veterinarian services, amusement parks and sporting events.

-- a $12 increase in annual vehicle registration fees.

-- cutting $2.5 billion from schools and community colleges.

-- eliminating dental insurance for poor adults on the state’s MediCal program and lowering subsidies to the aged, blinded and disabled. California’s welfare subsidies would also be reduced.

Lawmakers will have until the end of the month to take action."
